What's included

  • The surgeon's fee and the hospital or clinic fee
  • The anaesthetist and the general anaesthetic
  • A night in hospital when the surgeon wants you to stay
  • Your support bra, dressings and wound checks, and follow-up for months afterwards

What pushes it up or down

  • Up: implants, an anchor-shaped lift, a second night, or combining with a tummy tuck
  • Up: a revision of earlier breast surgery
  • Down: a small lift around the areola, sometimes as a day case
  • Not a factor: the county. Prices outside Dublin sit in the same range

Prices in euro for the full procedure. This is our guide, not a quote: the surgeon sets your price after examining you, in writing.

A close bunch of pink garden roses

Why one quote is higher than another

Most of the cost is the hospital: the theatre time, the anaesthetist and a bed for the night. A bigger lift, with an anchor-shaped scar, takes longer than a lift around the areola. Adding implants adds the implants themselves and more theatre time, which is why a lift with implants starts from about €9,500. A breast reduction with a lift sits at €6,500 to €9,700.

The county you live in makes little difference. Prices in Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny and Kerry sit in the same range as Dublin. The surgeon and the hospital move the price more than the place.

What a fair quote includes

  • The surgeon's fee, the hospital or clinic fee and the anaesthetist
  • A night in hospital, if the surgeon wants you to stay
  • The post-surgery bra and dressings
  • Your wound checks and follow-up visits, often for a year
  • What happens, and who pays, if you need a second operation

Ask for it in writing before you pay a deposit. Some surgeons charge for the first consultation, usually €195 to €300, and some take it off the price if you go ahead.

Insurance, tax and paying

Health insurance plans normally exclude cosmetic surgery, except to correct disfigurement from a condition you were born with, an accident or a disease. A breast lift for appearance is almost never covered. Check your own policy before anything is booked.

Revenue lists breast augmentation among the cosmetic procedures that get no tax relief. Relief may be possible where surgery corrects a health issue, at the standard rate of 20%.

Some clinics offer payment plans through a finance company. Read the interest rate and the total you'll repay, and never sign on the day of your consultation.

Later costs to know about

A lift on its own has no parts to replace. Implants do: they don't last a lifetime, and some women need more surgery after about ten years. Replacing implants costs €4,000 to €6,000 in Ireland. Read a lift with implants.

Abroad

Packages in Turkey are advertised at about €3,600 to €5,900 for a lift, before flights, extra nights and time off work. Read breast lift in Turkey or Ireland before you decide.
